Saint Francis Chalkboard Drawing

When I told the story of Saint Francis a few years ago, I spent a long time on his youth, and his dreams of glory to be chivalrous knight and carousing cocky youth.  Just before his transformation, I related a story of  Francis, after having been ill with fever encounters a ragged beggar on the road, who was once a famed and great solider.  In contrast to his previous moments where Francis experienced great of pity for the poor people of Assisi,  in this moment, he is full of compassion, for he recognizes his kinship with the soldier and hence all people are truly his brothers and sisters.  While  St. Martin gives half his cloak to the beggar,  St. Francis offers him nearly everything. This moment precedes his showdown with dad where he gives up everything to be a poor brother, but is foreshadowing of that moment when you strips himself bare in the church.

In this image, I wanted to represent that Francis and the Beggar are equal and for it to be undefined who was giving and who was receiving.

This, of course, was a Block image, not a picture for the children to draw.
